Nativity Plays Et Al

As Christmas approaches schools and churches that have not given in to PC mania are busily rehearsing their Christmas shows. I go into orbit when I hear that yet another school, or council, has taken CHRIST out of Xmas for fear of upsetting ethnic minorities, whom I am sure are not in the least bit upset by Christians celebrating their festivals!

Nativity Plays are guaranteed to bring the house down more for the unexpected ad libbing on the part of the children, than their thespian prowess! When our eldest daughter, now a curate, was about seven, she staged a Nativity play for our delectation and delight. Her two younger sisters had parts and so did the cat and soft toys! She caused near hysteria among her parents when she got to the narrative about the wise men. "And they brought gifts of Gold, Frankenstein and Myrrh". Happy Days!!

My little grandson Elliot, just two, has been chosen to play the part of a shepherd in his nursery’s Nativity Play on December 13th. He looks so cute in his costume, which my daughter bought for a tenner from Woolies! She reckoned that it would cost her a lot more to make it. It came complete with a shepherd’s crook, which I was pleased to see was made of foam rubber. My grandson might look angelic in his photo, but he can be a little scamp, so should he take it into his head to wallop the doll playing the part of baby Jesus, rather than ‘worship’ at the manager, then no damage will be done!
