God Mobbing

I have been posting on Christian Internet forums for a number of years and have been disquieted at the rise of what I term, ‘God Mobbing’. This takes the form of bludgeoning people, usually in capital letters, with such choice phrases as, ‘REPENT, OR BURN IN THE FIRES OF HELL’ or ‘THE END IS NIGH, PREPARE TO MEET THY GOD’. These are backed up with Biblical verses that seem to support the God Mobbers perception of God. I think the extreme fundamentalist Christians, who favour us with slogans of this nature, are the Internet equivalent of the sandwich board men I remember from my childhood. One felt some pity for those people as they trudged up and down the high street in all weathers. The new breed is more intense and fanatical than the sandwich board men of my youth. Their rabid utterances against anyone who doesn’t share their very narrow view of God, is enough to make your flesh crawl. They have a special hatred of homosexuals, whom they seem to view as the ’antichrist’. Their homophobic rants are nasty, and desperately upsetting to the gay Christians who post on these forums.

‘God Mobbers’ are still on the margins of British society, but in America it would appear that they have the ear of the Administration! There is something called ‘Dominionist Theology’, which as far as I can ascertain, wishes to bring about a society based on the law as laid down in Leviticus. In order to do this the supporters of Dominionist Theology would use the ballot box to bring in an American President and Administration who supported their aims. The first act of this new Government would be to do away with the democratic process, imposing their God, Taliban style, on the people! One ‘God Mobber’, who is fully in support of this philosophy, suggested with great glee that execution of gays under such a regime would be mandatory, and even the stoning of disobedient children would be acceptable! At first we thought the poster in question had completely lost it, but were shocked to discover that her views are in line with those of some other Dominionist theologians. Even bringing back slavery is on their agenda, according to one web site I found!

I don’t think I am being unduly alarmist when I say that if these people aren’t marginalised and prevented from spreading their hate-filled virus today; the whole world, not only the US, may well regret it tomorrow!
