Ominous Quiet Water
My middle daughter, Nikki, and her family are currently living in Jackfield, Shropshire close to Ironbridge. The area is a heritage site and very picturesque. They are renting a house whilst their ‘butty’ boat is being made ready for habitation. This boat will be linked to their canal boat and provide more living space for the family. They are very used to being surrounded by water, but Nikki is paranoid about the stretch of river about twenty meters away, and running parallel to the house. I share her concern. The River Severn, at that point, is very wide and fast flowing, but ominously quiet. One has an excellent vantage point from the modern iron bridge which spans its width. The Boat Inn, just down the road, opposite the river, displays on its door the flood levels. The last time the river flooded, big time, a year or two ago, it came way past the top of door and is not recorded! Not only is Nikki concerned about the house flooding, so far their row of houses have been spared, but the fate of her children if they fell into the river. I think only the strongest swimmer would have a chance against that ominous quiet water!
Ominous Quiet Water
Flowing with swift placidity
The surface softly undulating
Stealthily increasing its volume
Slowly but perceptibly the level rises
The darkness hides the imminent danger
Its defences are overwhelmed
The river’s banks breached along its length
Releasing the ominous quiet water.
