Hamster Antics

We are very careful to shred all private documentation nowadays. Apparently there are people who will raid your dustbin for a fee, and pass on bank statements and items with your name and address to firms with less than ethical trading practices!

A few weeks ago David was surveying a pile of shredded paper, and said it would make excellent hamster bedding! We used to keep hamsters many years ago among the vast menagerie of pets we then owned. Strangely enough, although I run a million miles if confronted by the tiniest mouse, I don’t mind hamsters! Remembering what David had said about the shredded paper making good hamster bedding, I decided to buy him a hamster as a present for our 36th Wedding Anniversary on August 14th. The hamster starter pack came with everything necessary to make the small creature feel at home. I chose a Syrian hamster, and duly presented it to David, who seemed surprised, but pleased with his present. The pack contained some soft wadding and I put this in the little hamster house just to start him off. When I came to clean him out a day or two later, (funny how I got landed with the job!), I put some shredded paper into the house instead of the wadding. The hamster was definitely not impressed and staged a protest. Putting up two paws to me, he went and slept on the wood shavings in the corner of his cage, with a look on his little face as if to say, "Look how uncomfortable you have made me!" I promptly exchanged the shredded paper for the nice soft wadding. With a smug expression the hamster flounced back into his house. You can’t win them all!

BTW David wishes it to be known that he was injured whilst this photo of the hamster was taken! The creature was not impressed by being dragged from his bed at 11.30 am, and showed his disapproval by giving his master’s finger a nasty nip that drew blood! David is threatening to add the hamster to the jam he is making, and put it around the tulip bulbs so we will have ‘Tulips from hamster jam’, GROAN!
