Bicycle Ride In Aid Of The British Heart Foundation

Many of us may find that at some stage during our life our heart may need a bit of tweaking and fine tuning. The statistics are rather alarming. There are over 268,000 heart attacks in the UK every year - that's one every two minutes. 30% of people who have a heart attack die before they even reach hospital. Four times as many women die from coronary disease as from breast cancer. 5,500 babies are born with heart defects every year! www.bhf.org.uk

One of the more fortunate ones was our neighbour, in North Wales, who suffered a massive heart attack, a few weeks ago, which nearly killed him. However, after treatment using none invasive techniques, Les is looking and feeling very well, and should have a normal life expectancy. New ways of treating heart disease are being developed all the time thanks, in part, to the work of the British Heart Foundation. The BHF is the UK's number one heart charity and the largest independent funder of heart research in the country.  Through its crucial research and care, the BHF is winning the fight against heart disease.

Money is always needed to keep a charity like BHS going. On June 19th, his 54th birthday, a Christian cyber-pal of mine, Steve Horsfall, will be taking part in the London to Brighton Bike Ride run by the British Heart Foundation, "in tandem with" (as they put it!) Shredded Wheat. This is the 30th anniversary of the ride, and the 26th that has benefited the BHF.  It starts on the south side of Clapham Common, and ends 54 miles away on Brighton seafront. It is the largest sponsored bike ride in the UK attracting 27,000, the maximum number of riders permitted. To encourage the entrants, various prizes are offered: the top individual fundraiser wins £750 worth of Harrods vouchers, and two runners-up win Fortnum and Mason hampers.  A gold certificate is awarded to those raising over £1000, a silver certificate over £500, and a bronze certificate for raising more than £150.

Steve Horsfall is a very keen cyclist who appears to view the combustion engine as locomotion for sissies! This year he will be riding a red Brompton folding cycle with other Brompton enthusiasts, forming an informal team. As a warm up, Steve will cycle the 30 miles from his home in Hemel Hempstead to Clapham Common, arriving at 6am, the official start time for his class of bicycle. Even the keenest of cyclists have their limits, and Steve will ‘let the train take the strain’ on his way home! Folding bicycles are easily portable.

Steve has already raised £201.61 in sponsorship and hopefully will well exceed this total by June 19th. Anyone wishing to sponsor Steve may do so by following this link. Sponsor Steve Good luck Steve!
