Search For The Hero Inside Yourself

Ellen McArthur is now back on dry land after sailing into the record books. At 26, she is the youngest and fastest lone round the world woman yachtsperson. One can only imagine how hard her voyage must have been. Ellen must have had to dig very deep inside herself, and use all her mental and physical reserves, to pull off such a magnificent achievement. This brave lady had to face mountainous seas, and a tremendous feeling of vulnerability, as she raced her small craft across the vast oceans of our planet. I am an abysmal sailor and would have been hanging over the side, praying for death, as soon as the sea became slightly choppy, if I had the temerity to attempt sailing around the world!

We can’t all be adventurers, but most of us have to face situations that call for us to find bravery that we didn’t know we possessed. It takes courage to dust ourselves off and get on with life, when we have been knocked flat on our back by a traumatic life event. I think that a strong personal faith in God helps one to find the fortitude to carry on after the wind has been taken out of our sails. We can feel very alone, buffeted and afraid in the midst of life’s unpredictable sea, it is not always easy to trust God to steer us safely into the sheltering harbour. If we can take the necessary leap of faith, we will have Divine assistance as we search for the hero inside ourselves.
