A Christmas Prayer

Lord,

The festive season is once again upon us. Thank you for the undoubted excitement it beings to my family and myself. The shining faces of our young grandsons as they gaze enchanted at the decorations, bringing a lump to my throat. The evocative seasonal smells of spice, mulled wine and preparation of Christmas sweet meats are tempting to the olfactory sensors. I take satisfaction in witnessing my family whispering in corners, knowing it is my presents that are being discussed!

Amid the excitement and general busyness, please help us not forget that first Christmas. The conditions for the birth decidedly squalid, no tinsel adorned the rough crib. Yet out of the filth and wretchedness a light shone out, percolating the gloom and radiating down the centuries. That light represents the purest of love, which offers hope to the demoralised and despairing.

Please let us be mindful of those much less fortunate than ourselves, who do not have the love and support of a family and friends. We think of people who take no joy in Christmas for a variety of reasons, grief, illness or no place to call home. Many are social outcasts despised and rejected by their peers. Please help them to access the spark of the divine within, to bring them lasting peace and comfort. Amen
