Hypnotherapy
For many years I have suffered with a chronic anxiety disorder, one of the symptoms is going into ostrich mode, sticking my head in the sand and not facing up to problems!
It was suggested that hypnotherapy maybe helpful in order to switch off the triggers that activate my anxiety responses. Naturally, having seen stage hypnotists at work on TV, I was sceptical and rather apprehensive about seeking this sort of therapy. I did some research into the subject, and discovered that in the hands of a qualified and registered hypnotherapist I was unlikely to come to any harm, and it could beneficial.
Last Friday I had my first session. Mr Bell, the gentleman providing the therapy, was very reassuring and I felt comfortable with him. He took thirty minutes to explain, in great detail, the procedure and answer my questions. Once I was completely happy about what was to take place, he put on some soporific music and I was asked to close my eyes concentrate on the sound of his voice. Mr Bell counted to five at which stage he said I would be unable to open my eyes, which seemed to be the case! I felt much more relaxed than I had done in years.
I was told to visualise a place where I felt calm and secure, whilst in this deep state of relaxation. It was also suggested that I rub the fore finger and thumb of my right hand together whenever I feel anxious. Whilst in this state of altered perception, I saw some lovely colours, purple, blue and yellow, which helped with the general feeling of well being. I guess this lasted for about one hour before I was brought back to reality. In all this time I was totally aware of what was going on, and there was nothing to disquiet the soul.My husband, David, thinks that the therapy has made me more chilled out and calm, whether the effects will last, remains to be seen, but I think it was £40 well spent.
