Dark and Light
We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light
......Plato
I recently came across this saying of Plato; I think it is spot on, especially in my case!
When I was born in 1950, our home in Guernsey had no mains electricity; we relied on oil lamps and the vagaries of a very noisy generator. I was terrified of the dark and had a small candle powered night light, which cast the most frightening shadows on the walls of my bedroom! I think I was more afraid of the ghouls it conjured up in my imagination than the pitch dark!
I now have a tendency to bury my head in the proverbial sand, ostrich style, using avoidance tactics rather than face an issue head on. I have some dark recesses in my mind, which could do with a bright light shining into the murky blackness so that I can confront, head on, the fears that lurk in the gloom.
As I progress on my spiritual path, I hope that the light that shines into the depths of my soul is that purest of radiance, the Light of the World.
