What A Whopper!

I recently saw a news item featuring a newborn baby who had tipped the scales at 14lbs! The mother had sensibly opted for a c-section. I do hope the parents had not invested too heavily in clothes fitting an average newborn infant! I believe that largest baby ever recorded was a mind-boggling 24lb, according to the Guinness Book of records

My father tells the tale of the Irish labourer who worked on my grandfather’s farm before WW2. This gentleman’s wife had just given birth to her tenth child. The usual enquiries were made as to the sex, weight and health of the new arrival. The labourer looked a little mournful; although the mother and baby boy were well, the baby was so small, only 11lbs!!! Choking on this bit of information, they asked how big the previous nine babies had been, the proud father announced that none of them had been less than 14 lbs in weight, all natural births! Having given birth three times to normal birth weight babies myself, the very thought of giving birth to a baby, not far off twice the size of mine, makes me shudder!!!

Our middle daughter, Nikki, is staying with us for a week with her two-year-old son, Quinn. She is 30 weeks pregnant and I hope I am not too unkind when I say that there is a striking resemblance between our girl and a beached whale! We are hoping that the little one does not break any records weight- wise!

I would have found it interesting to know what Jesus weighed when he was born. I don’t know if there was any method of weighing babies in Biblical times. One can only assume that the baby was of normal size as the gospel writers may have recorded any deviation from the norm.
