Garden Gnomes!

My husband, David, dislikes most garden ornaments, but reserves a particular detestation for garden gnomes! If there was a society for the abolition of the garden gnome, I am sure he would become a member. When he sees one of these offending objects in a garden, he has to resist the urge to do it some damage! I can’t say I particularly like them either. However, when I see an inexpensive one in a shop, I have been known to buy it as a wind up for my beloved. I put it in an inconspicuous spot in the garden and wait to see how long it is before there is a yell of rage when it is discovered! Sometimes the gnome can remain undisturbed for days, as David is not the most observant of people. Often the poor gnome will meet with an ‘accident’.

My eldest grandson, Quinn, who is two, has just got the age where he can have the fun of hiding the gnome from Gramps, and enjoy the fuss his grandfather will make when it is found! I am quite pleased with my latest acquisition, it is cuter than most, in my opinion!

In Guernsey, my childhood home, there was a tearoom that featured a complete garden full of gnomes; many of them were quite big, about four feet high. When her grandchildren were visiting the island, my mother would treat them to tea there, enjoying delight on their little faces, as they encountered all those gnomes!

Love them or hate them, most people have an opinion on garden gnomes!
