The God Franchise!

I enjoy forums, especially religious ones. I belong to one or two using the handle ‘Tangnefedd’, which is Welsh for peace, as in ‘peace be with you’.

I am unashamedly a liberal Christian; my views do not always conform to those of a more fundamentalist persuasion. We have some real knock about debates, and I have every respect for those people who shake hands, metaphorically, and agree to differ if there is no meeting of minds on a topic.

The folk I do have a problem with are the ones who think they own the God Franchise! They believe that their portion of the truth is absolutely and utterly right, and everyone else is deluded, if not downright evil! If I had a pound coin for every time I had been accused of being in league with Satan, I would be moderately well off by now. The people I am talking about often back up their narrow view of Christianity with a Biblical verse taken wildly out of context. I am pretty certain that one could support any point of view by trawling the Bible for a snippet that seems to concur with a particular standpoint!

I think some people put God in a box marked, ‘My Property’. Are they frightened that the Deity may have a mind of His own, which might not accord with their prejudices if given His freedom?
