John 14:8-17
Gospel : John 14:8-17
Jesus gives us three precious promises in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd person:
1. A FIRST-PERSON PROMISE ABOUT PRAYER 13-15
Whatever you ask I will do:
a. We have an Advocate with the Father. 13
". . . Jesus Christ the righteous: and He is the propitiation for our sins" (1
John 2:1-2). Whatever we ask in His name, He will do it. He can do it because
He is the propitiation for our sins; it is our sins which prevent us from
framing proper requests, let alone getting answers (Ps 66:18).
b. We have an Avowal from the Son. 14-15
Whatever we ask for, He will do. But it must be something in keeping with His
character and commandments: "You ask and receive not, because you ask amiss,
that you may spend it on your lusts" (Jas 4:3). "If you love me you will keep
My commandments". If you keep His commandments, He will keep His promises!
2. A SECOND-PERSON PROMISE ABOUT POWER 10-12
Greater things than this you will do:
a. Not the Great Work that Jesus did for the Believer. . .
His Great Work was the work of reconciling God and man (2 Cor 5:19); not
walking on the water or even raising the four-days-dead. This Great Work of
Redemption was declared "finished" on the Cross; there is nothing "greater
than this" for us to do! So Jesus must have been referring to His great work
of Preaching and Healing.
b. . . . but the Greater Work that the Believer does for Jesus.
Our Greater Work then is in leading more people to Christ than He could reach
in His 3 short years on earth. A mere 120 were in the Temple on the day of
Pentecost; but 3000 more were saved that same day. Now hundreds of millions
have been saved worldwide. It is promised that signs and wonders will
accompany the preaching of the Gospel, and they do - but these are works of
grace and mercy, not works of magic.
3. A THIRD-PERSON PROMISE ABOUT CARE 16-17
He is with you, He is in you:
a. He is our personal Paraclete.
He is no impersonal placebo but a Personal Presence who dwells in us for ever.
"Your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you" (1 Cor 6:19). Jesus
is now in heaven and not here; the Holy Spirit is both here and in heaven :
omnipresent.
b. He is our powerful Protector.
Being within He garrisons us and keeps us from the world, the flesh and the
devil. Worldly people walking in the flesh cannot receive Him or know Him; His
actions are incomprehensible to them. Demons know Him, and tremble: "Greater
is He that is in you, than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4).
c. He is our truthful Interpreter.
He enables us to discern the spirits of error and antichrist which abound. He
does not speak by Himself, but He takes the truths of Jesus and interprets
them to us. The prime Truth which He teaches us is the truth that "Jesus is
LORD (YHWH)" (1 Cor 12:3). So the Father is YHWH; the Son is YHWH; and the
Holy Spirit is YHWH; three Persons and One God.
