1 John 5:4-12
Evidence of Christ's risen Life in us: 1. WE HAVE A NEW VICTORY IN CHRIST 4-5 a. Victory is Perceived in Christ. 4a In the wilderness; in Gethsemane; on the Cross, Christ overcame not only the World, but also the Flesh and the Devil. In the Garden Tomb Christ overcame Death itself when he rose again. b. Victory is Received in Christ. 4b-5 By faith in Christ we receive the victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil; and ultimately over death too at the Resurrection and Rapture of the saints. "Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory" (1 Corinthians 15:57). 2. WE HAVE A NEW CERTAINTY IN CHRIST 6-7, 9 a. The Witness of the Spirit. Jesus Christ is He who baptises with the Holy Spirit (John 1:32-34); he is the Son of God. (John Baptist says) b. The Witness of the Water and the Blood. This is He who died and was buried (John 19:34-35). (John Evangelist says) c. The Witness of the Father. "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to him" (at the Transfiguration, when 3 witnesses were present). They were talking with Moses and Elijah, both alive and well! (Matthew 17:5; Peter, James and John say). 3. WE HAVE A NEW TESTIMONY IN CHRIST 8, 10-12 a. We have the Spirit of Conviction. (Pentecost) Conviction of sin "because they believe not in me" (John 16:8-9). b. We have the Water of Conversion. (Baptism) We are Baptised into Christ's Death and Resurrection (Romans 6:3). We have forgiveness of sins, and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39). We are a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17). c. We have the Blood of Consecration. (Eucharist, Lord's Supper) We are Sanctified by holy things to eat and drink. By them "we show forth the Lord's death until he come" (1 Corinthians 11:26). -- Revd Ben Crick, BA CF232 Canterbury Road, Birchington, Kent, CT7 9TD (UK) http://www.cnetwork.co.uk/crick.htm
